About Words In the Bucket:

Founded in 2014, Words in the Bucket (WIB) is an online platform that aims to bring attention
to overlooked and/or under-looked international issues related to human rights protection, social inclusion, women’s rights, gender, development, and environment by publishing relevant and up-to-date articles to help readers better understand issues unfolding around the world. WIB believes that raising awareness, informing people, and encouraging their participation and the sharing of their opinions form the fundamental basis for change. WIB content is produced by regular contributors from countries around the world. The core team is comprised of 5 individuals with professional experiences in research and analysis, NGO work, and the United Nations, with expertise in international relations, human rights, gender and women’s rights, and refugee rights.

The Role:

Join Words in the Bucket (WIB), a vibrant team of writers of varying ages from different cultures who share the common goal of identifying, writing, and disseminating information to raise awareness about global issues that are often overlooked and/or under-addressed. You will have the opportunity to work with the core team at WIB on increasing the platform’s visibility and further developing and implementing its social media strategy. You will have the opportunity to work with a group of young people, researchers, and experts with experience working for NGOs, activist groups, and the United Nations.

In order to improve the quality of Words in the Bucket’s work, it is essential that the platform increases its visibility and outreach and establishes a stronger presence in its various social media channels (mainly Twitter and Facebook).

The core team recently developed a social media strategy; however, we need someone to implement it (fine-tuning as necessary), while suggesting ideas on how to further improve the strategy. The core team is comprised of volunteers who all have full-time jobs and work from different time zones. They multitask the work of organizing, editing, and publishing contributors’ articles, develop and execute side projects to promote WIB’s contributors, maintain the WIB website, and much more.

Thus, the core team is seeking someone to support them by implementing a social media strategy to facilitate their existing work and help grow WIB’s online presence and reach.

Responsibilities:

The Visibility and Social Media Volunteer will assist WIB team in growing the platform’s visibility and bolstering its social media strategy for at least 6 months, starting as soon as possible. He or she will be responsible for maintaining Facebook and Twitter account, as well as promoting WIB activities on social media in order to attract more contributors and potentially external funding. The individual should contribute and share new ideas and digital and/or social media tools with the core team.

Expected outputs:

  • Monitor, maintain and update WIB’s social media activity on Twitter and Facebook
  • Re-post already published articles on the weekends (via HootSuite or other)
  • Identify new social media channels for advertising WIB (FB groups, FB pages, Twitter lists, Twitter users to tag)
  • Organize social media campaigns (frequency and nature of the campaigns to be discussed with the core team)
  • Re-post relevant articles for International Days (for example, FGM, Female Genital Mutilation, day on 6 February)
  • Identify and implement innovative ways to increase WIB’s readership
  • Brainstorm ways to cultivate additional support and public outreach (for example, development of new partnerships, VIP guests posting, fundraising)

Desired qualifications and skills:

  • BA or enrolled in BA in Communications, Social Entrepreneurship, International Development or related
  • Interest in acquiring and strengthening experience in Fundraising and Communications in the nonprofit sector
  • Active Twitter and Facebook account
  • Familiarity with social media channels in a professional context
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights, gender, development, and environment issues
  • Verifiable online communications and social media experience (examples of related work or projects would be an asset)
  • Comfortable with work remotely and communicating via email and other digital channels with the team

What you get?

You will have the opportunity to work with a team of individuals from all over the world who are enthusiastic about independent media and work hard to grow WIB into something larger and more significant. On our core team, we have individuals working for The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and Devex, for the United Nations (IFAD and UN Women), for non-governmental organizations (working with refugees and environmental issues in Brazil) and in research (employment benefits and legislation in Latin American and European countries).

You will get to practice your skills and will receive guidance, contacts and help from a team of experienced individuals.

This melting pot of experiences and cultures is a source of pride and uniqueness for our team and we believe it would benefit, and amass further value, for the individual who assumes the role of the Outreach and Social Media Coordinator.

The Outreach & Social Media Coordinator position is not remunerated and a volunteer position that can fit around a full-time job. The individual will work remotely on a part-time basis, to be agreed upon with the rest of the core team. Stable internet connection is also required.
