About Words In the Bucket:
Founded in 2014, Words in the Bucket (WIB) is an online platform that aims to bring attention to overlooked and/or under-looked international issues related to human rights protection, social inclusion, women’s rights, gender, development, and environment by publishing relevant and up-to-date articles to help readers better understand issues unfolding around the world. WIB believes that raising awareness, informing people, and encouraging their participation and the sharing of their opinions form the fundamental basis for change. WIB content is produced by regular and guest contributors from countries around the world. The core team is comprised of 5 individuals with professional experiences in research and analysis, NGO work, and the United Nations, with expertise in international relations, human rights, gender and women’s rights, and refugee rights.
The Role:
Join Words in the Bucket (WIB), a vibrant team of writers of varying ages from different cultures who share the common goal of identifying, writing, and disseminating information to raise awareness about global issues that are often overlooked and/or under-addressed. You will have the opportunity to work with the core team at WIB to maintain existing partnerships/collaborations and identify new ones, and increase WIB’s outreach beyond social media. You will have the opportunity to work with a group of young people, researchers, and experts with experience working for NGOs, activist groups, and the United Nations.
In order to improve the quality of WIB’s work, it is essential for the platform to increase its visibility and outreach through different channels (excluding social media).
The core team is comprised of volunteers who all have full time jobs and work from different time zones. They multitask the work of organizing, editing, and publishing contributors’ articles, developing and executing side projects to promote WIB’s contributors, maintain WIB’s website, and much more.
The core team currently has partnerships with organizations and individuals who are interested in WIB’s content. Current partnerships only involve the sharing of content and cross-posting, and the WIB team would like to take that a step further. We are seeking someone to maintain our current partnerships while also identifying new opportunities with existing, as well as new partners.
Responsibilities:
The Partnerships and Outreach Volunteer will assist the WIB team in growing the platform’s visibility and bolstering its partnerships. The work will last for at least 6 months, and ideally start as soon as possible. He or she will be responsible for maintaining current partnerships, making sure that what has been agreed by both parties is implemented. The volunteer will also build up a guideline for developing partnership for WIB and increase our outreach. The individual should be willing to contribute and share new ideas with the core team.
Expected outcomes:
- Monitor, maintain and update WIB’s existing partnerships.
- Build a database of potential influencers who could contribute relevant content to WIB’s website.
- Contact influencers and propose partnerships or collaboration.
- Identify new channels and ways for advertising WIB beyond social media.
- Propose small projects/campaigns that could involve partners and improve WIB’s outreach.
- Identify and implement innovative ways to increase WIB’s readership beyond social media.
- Brainstorm ways to cultivate additional support and public outreach (for example, development of new partnerships, influencer guest posting, fundraising, etc.)
Desired qualifications and skills:
- BA, or currently studying a BA in Communications, Social Entrepreneurship, International Development or related
- Interest in acquiring and strengthening experience in Fundraising and Communications in the non-profit sector
- Familiarity with customer service and partnerships in the non-profit sector
- Demonstrated interest in human rights, gender, development, and environment issues
- Verifiable online communications and social media experience (examples of related work or projects would be an asset)
- Comfortable with work remotely and communicating via email and other digital channels with the team
What you get?
You will have the opportunity to work with a team of individuals from all over the world who are enthusiastic about independent media and work hard to grow WIB into something larger and more significant. On our core team, we have individuals working for The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and Devex, for the United Nations (IFAD and UN Women), for non-governmental organizations (working with refugees and environmental issues in Brazil) and in research (employment related topics in Latin American and European countries).
You will get to practice your skills and will receive guidance and help from a team of experienced individuals. You will engage on a regular basis with NGOs, media outlets and social entrepreneurs who all share the vision of WIB, and want to collaborate with us.
This melting pot of experiences and cultures is a source of pride and uniqueness for our team and we believe it would benefit, and amass further value, for the individual who assumes this role.
The Partnerships and Outreach position is not remunerated and is a volunteer position. The individual will work remotely on a part-time basis, to be agreed upon by the rest of the core team. Stable Internet connection is required.
If you are interested in the role, please send your CV and a short cover letter (400 - 500 words) to [email protected]. Please specify “Partnerships and Outreach Volunteer” in the subject line.
